Heritage Professionals Urge Nigerian Representation at COP29 to Protect Cultural Sites.

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s cultural heritage sector are calling for the country’s active participation in the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), slated for November 11-22 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

A recent symposium held at the University of Lagos, titled “Nigeria’s Heritage in the Time of Climate Change,” highlighted the concerns. Organized by researcher and heritage expert Prof. Olufemi Adetunji, with support from ICOMOS Nigeria, University of Lincoln, the British Academy UK, and Legacy 1995 Nigeria, the event brought together experts to discuss the threats posed by climate change to Nigeria’s historical sites and cultural landscapes.

The symposium emphasized the urgency for Nigerian representation at COP29. Stakeholders believe that having a Nigerian delegation present will ensure that the nation’s unique heritage is considered in international climate change discussions. Their primary concern is that without a strong voice, Nigeria’s cultural heritage risks being overlooked in the face of the climate crisis.

The symposium highlighted the devastating effects of climate change on Nigeria, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and increased temperatures. These factors pose a significant threat to the nation’s historical sites, monuments, and cultural landscapes.

The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage action. Discussions focused on developing strategies for climate-resilient heritage management practices, fostering community engagement in conservation efforts, and exploring opportunities for international cooperation and funding.

By advocating for Nigerian representation at COP29, stakeholders hope to inspire the development of sustainable heritage management practices that integrate climate change considerations. This will be crucial in protecting the nation’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
