Legacy Anniversary Academic Webinar: Tørrfisk / Stockfish / Panla: The tasty ties between Norway and Nigeria.

Listen to this article

Legacy’s last webinar of the year is focusing on everyone’s favorite topic: food. In this case we are diving into the history of stockfish in Nigeria. Many Nigerians dishes are unthinkable without it, and Nigerians are the world’s biggest consumers. But where does the dried cod come from and what’s the history behind this food heritage?

Andreas Liebe Delsett is a Norwegian food writer and the author of four books. Stockfish is part of his family history: his greatgrandfather used to dry cod heads in Lofoten, the heartland of Norwegian stockfish production for more than a millennium. Delsett is intrigued how this key commodity in Norwegian connects his country of birth to the rest of the world – and especially to Nigeria.

In this webinar, Delsett will share the fascinating stories and pictures he has uncovered about the stockfish trade between Nigeria and Norway. A short documentary will show the production process of this tastemaker. And we will hear from a son of Alhaji M. Ade Kasumu aka Oyinbo Oni Panla. He was one of Nigeria’s biggest stockfish importers, and was identified from a historic picture made on the market in Bergen, Norway, with help of Legacy subscribers like you.

Join us on this Legacy ZOOM webinar moderated by Lagos based researcher, Femke van Zeijl on Thursday 18 December 7:00-8 :30 PM (WAT).
